Entering Peru Unaided

Chiclayo's smallest man is in charge of the city's largest door
He has had this job for years and does it well.

Chiclayo is a tatty town. I've no idea why we stayed here.

Macara, Ecuador - Chiclayo, Peru - 250 miles

I decided to take matters into my own hands this morning. The group was going to leave our ratty Hostel at 7:30 to go to the border. I got Mac, skipped breakfast and rode straight to the border. We were there before they officially opened but persuaded them to stamp our passports anyway. We sat with the Peruvian commandant in his open air office which overlooked a nicely flowing river. As he had his lackeys check our vehicle documents he asked us about our journey. As usual he grinned when we told him it was a five month Odyssey. He bade us good luck and let us enter. The great Ecuadorean Andes stopped abruptly at the Peruvian border. Things got dry, flat and poor abruptly. Horses were now rare, in their stead there are donkeys.

Never have I witnessed such a drastic difference. This Eastern side of Peru is terribly ugly. Within 50 miles of the border we were on a flat, straight, desert road. We had been told that we'll go up in the mountains in two days and it will be lovely.

One obvious blight on the landscape is the trash. Filth and litter are everywhere. This was not how I envisioned Peru!
