We left Cusco by bus, hopped on a four hour train, then took another bus up to MP. The Incas built a nice town in the 1450's but left when the conquistadores killed everyone in Cusco. Thus it was only populated about a 100 years. They didn't do human sacrifices, and were mostly farmers. By far the most impressive aspect of this place is where it's located. The granite mountains couldn't get more massive and vertical. The whole area is semi-topical forest. Trees grow everywhere. It was so overgrown when the Incas left in the early 1500's that it was lost to history until Hiraim Bingham discovered it in the 1940's.

Jim, Hope the bike makes it all the way! Don't leave us in suspense.
Also just want to thank you for your daily blogs and pictures. I like to read it early in the morning, after Daniel has left for HS but before anyone else is up in the house (except the dog). It lets me escape with you for a little while.
