Arequipa to Arica - 300 miles

Arequipa is a large city with three looming volcanoes surrounding it. No eruptions for decades though. This is our last stop in Peru. Though it started out with ugly poverty and squalor, the high plains and mountains of Peru were remarkably lovely. If you come to Peru seek out the altiplana and its people (anything over 8,000 feet will thrill you).
The main tourist attraction in town is Juanita, a young girl (about 16). She was brought up to the top of one of the extinct volcanoes and sacrificed about 600 years ago. She was discovered in the mid 1990's by an archeologist named John/Juan (hence he called her Juanita). SAhe is proof that the Incas used human sacrifice to appease the gods. They raised some young members of the ruling class families for the honor of being a sacrificee!!
